About
LimeWire was a peer-to-peer file-sharing program launched in 2000 by Mark Gorton and operated by the company Lime Group. It was designed to facilitate the sharing of digital media files, particularly music, movies, and software, using the Gnutella network. LimeWire gained significant popularity in the early 2000s as users sought free and easy ways to download content online. It featured a user-friendly interface that allowed users to search for and download files from other computers connected to the network.
LimeWire became one of the most widely-used file-sharing platforms of its time, but it also attracted legal challenges due to widespread copyright infringement. Many users used the platform to share and download copyrighted materials without permission, leading to significant concerns within the entertainment industry. As a result, LimeWire faced a series of lawsuits from organizations such as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
In 2010, after a prolonged legal battle, a U.S. federal court ordered LimeWire to shut down, ruling that the service had engaged in copyright infringement by facilitating the unauthorized distribution of copyrighted material. Following the shutdown, LimeWire ceased operations, and its website was taken offline.
