About
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) was a department of the United Kingdom government responsible for agricultural policy, food production, fisheries, and rural affairs. Established in 1955, it succeeded earlier government bodies overseeing agriculture and food supply. MAFF played a central role in regulating farming subsidies, food safety, animal health, and fisheries management. It was involved in implementing European Union agricultural policies and responding to crises such as the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) outbreak and foot-and-mouth disease. The ministry also worked on environmental conservation related to farming and rural land use. In 2002 , MAFF was dissolved and its functions were merged into the newly created Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), reflecting a broader focus on environmental sustainability alongside agricultural and food policy. Despite its dissolution, MAFF’s legacy continues in the UK’s agricultural and food regulatory framework.
