MI5, also known as the Security Service, is the United Kingdom’s domestic counterintelligence and security agency. Established in 1909, MI5’s primary responsibility is to protect national security by identifying and mitigating threats from espionage, terrorism, and other forms of subversion. Operating under the jurisdiction of the Home Office, MI5 conducts intelligence gathering, analysis, and operations within the UK and abroad. The agency works closely with other government departments, law enforcement agencies, and international partners to safeguard the country’s interests and ensure the safety of its citizens.
