The Operating System

OS X 10.0, codenamed “Cheetah,” debuted on March 24, 2001, marking Apple’s shift towards a new era of operating systems. Representing a departure from the classic Mac OS, it introduced a Unix-based foundation fused with elements from NeXTSTEP. Despite promising stability, performance enhancements, and a refreshed interface, the initial release faced criticism for notable deficiencies. Missing support for DVD playback, limited CD writing capabilities, and inadequate printer drivers for widespread devices posed significant user challenges. The Aqua interface, while visually appealing, encountered performance hiccups. Compatibility issues with third-party software further dampened its initial reception. OS X 10.0 served as a foundational framework for subsequent iterations, addressing early limitations and gradually refining its features and compatibility.
