The fifth major iteration of the Red Hat linux series, Red Hat Linux 5.0 - developed under the codename ‘Hurricane ‘- was release on the 1st December, 1997. With variants built to support x86, Alpha, and SPARC processors, it was during the main lifecycle of Red Hat Linux 5.0 that a number of major hardware and software vendors announced support Red Hat Linux.
Positively reviewed, Red Hat Linux 5.0 was available in an official boxed variant, via third party clones of the CD images, and via official CD images available over the internet.
Red Hat Linux 5.0 was superseded by Red Hat Linux 6.0 in the spring of 1999.
