GeoCities was a web hosting service founded in 1994 that provided users with the ability to create and publish their own websites. Acquired by Yahoo in 1999, GeoCities allowed individuals to build web pages within various “neighborhoods” based on thematic categories. Users could customize their pages using simple HTML tools, resulting in a diverse array of personal and hobbyist websites. Despite its initial popularity, GeoCities faced challenges in adapting to evolving internet technologies and user preferences. Yahoo ultimately discontinued GeoCities in 2009, citing low user engagement and the shifting landscape of web hosting services. While no longer operational, GeoCities remains a notable artifact of the early internet era, reflecting the grassroots origins of online self-expression and community-building.
